Director

The director reports directly to the Producing Artistic Director and works in tandem with the Production Manager. The director is responsible for setting the vision for the production and tasked with bringing together the script, cast and production team into a cohesive unit. 

Responsibilities:

  • Interpret the script in its entirety through detailed study, analysis, and research.

  • Clearly communicates artistic vision of the production

  • Reviews and provides feedback on the proposed production schedule

  • Collaborates in casting schedule

  • Cast the production

  • Collaborate with and lead the production team

  • Create the rehearsal schedule

  • Plan and prepare the rehearsal schedule

  • Conduct numerous careful readings of the script to develop an individual vision of the playwright’s intentions

  • Executes the artistic components of the production including actor and production team process

Stage Manager

The Stage Manager reports directly to the director and production manager. They provide logistical and managerial support to the cast and production team throughout the rehearsal and performance process. The Stage Manager works directly with the cast and production team to move a show from pre-production to post-production.

Responsibilities:

  • Read the script thoroughly making note of any/all prop, set, costume, lighting, or sound specifications

  • Attend all rehearsals and performances. Arrive at least 15 minutes before the cast to begin setup of the rehearsal/performance space

  • Attend and contribute to any and all design meetings with the director and designer.

  • Serve the director in whatever capacity is requested. This will more than likely include taking notes on any production specifications that are requested during the rehearsal process

  • Communicate daily with the cast and crew through rehearsal/performance reports

  • Prepares a safe and functional rehearsal space, appropriately set with props and set pieces for beginning of rehearsal

  • Serve as liaison between Director and Cast. Scheduling concerns, travel problems, production details etc. should all go through the SM

  • Create and maintain cast/crew contracts, contact sheets, cast sign-in sheets, and rehearsal schedules (this will include changes and additions to the schedule as well as things like costume parades, dry tech, photo call etc.)

  • With the help of the Scenic Designer, tape out the floor in the rehearsal space with necessary indications of any major scenic elements and coordinate with the pulling and storing of rehearsal set pieces and props

  • Coordinate with and assist the Lighting Designer when lights are hung, aimed, and focused

  • Coordinate with the Director/Sound Designer and board operator on all sound cues.

  • Assist the Director and the cast by notating all blocking and any blocking changes in a blocking prompt script OR delegating said tasks to an ASM

  • Create and maintain a prompt book that clearly defines all sound, lighting, and set change cues. 

  • Develops, communicates and maintains the safety of the rehearsal and performance space including emergency plans and first aid preparation, keeps first aid kit on hand and makes note/communicates safety concerns to appropriate person

  • Organizes cue to cue and all technical rehearsals

  • Maintain sound and light cue sheets

  • Create, maintain, and ensure execution all pre-show, intermission, and post-show checklists and coordinate work of the stage crew

  • Prep actors and crew regarding time to open and oversee all backstage activities

  • Assist the Director in maintaining rehearsal decorum by helping create a professional environment

  • Oversee the entire show each time it is performed, calls cues and maintains director’s vision until production closes

Assistant Stage Manager

The assistant stage manager is assigned specific stage management tasks under the supervision of the stage manager. The main function of the assistant stage manager is to assist the stage manager in facilitating rehearsals as well as the technical needs of the show. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Read the script thoroughly.

  • Attend all rehearsals and performances. Arrive at least 15 minutes before the cast to begin setup of the rehearsal/performance space.

  • Attend any and all design meetings with the director and designers.

  • Serve the stage manager in whatever capacity is requested. This will more than likely include taking notes on any production specifications that are requested during the rehearsal process, assisting in administrative tasks such as line notes, rehearsal reports, etc.

  • Prompts cast members as directed by stage manager

  • Presets rehearsal and performance spaces

  • Participates in the coordination backstage traffic and activity while the stage manager is in the house

  • Completes set changes and offstage quick changes

  • Prepares the stage for performance

  • Resets the stage for following performance at end of show

  • Communicates backstage activity and potential issues to stage manager

  • First responder in emergency situations and assists in safety protocols

Scenic Designer

The Scenic Designer reports to the director and to the production manager. The set designer’s primary responsibility and function is to design the physical surroundings in which the action of the play take place. The design should be based fully in the text, collaborating with director’s vision and the designer’s expertise. 

Responsibilities:

  • Read the script thoroughly making note of any/all scenery, furnishing and prop specifications.

  • Design set to include the established vision of the production

  • Collaborates with the director and production team in establishing set design

  • Presents design concept to production team

  • Create a scenic environment to suggest the specific time, period and place of the onstage action

  • Offer creative possibilities for the blocking of the actors

  • Attend and contribute to any and all production meetings. 

  • Provides floor plans and three-dimensional models created to scale, including placement of set pieces

  • Capable of performing master carpenter, painter or electrician duties as necessary and to personal abilities

  • Attends rehearsals as available

  • Attends load- in, dress rehearsals, load out etc.

  • Coordinates set construction

  • Works within a budget

Lighting Designer

The lighting designer reports to the director and to the production manager. The lighting designer’s primary responsibility and function is to design the lighting of the production to make the actors physically visible while affecting the mood of the onstage action. The lighting design should be textually based, collaborating with director’s vision and the designer’s expertise. 


Responsibilities:

  • Read the script thoroughly making note of any/all lighting specifications.

  • Design lighting that suggests mood and indicates time of day and location.

  • Design lighting to include the established vision of the production

  • Attend and contribute to any and all production meetings. 

  • Collaborates with the director and production team in establishing lighting design

  • Presents design concept to production team

  • Create and lighting plot and instrument schedule 

  • Create cue sheet

  • Perform Master Electrician duties to best of personal abilities including but not limited to the accurate execution and sustained function of the lighting plot 

  • Attends rehearsals as available

  • Attends load- in, cue- to- cue, dress rehearsals, load out etc.

  • Works within a budget

Costume Designer

The costume designer reports to the director and to the production manager. The costume designer’s primary responsibility and function is to design the clothing used in the production to enhance the characters’ appearances. The costume design should be textually based, collaborating with director’s vision and the designer’s expertise. 

Responsibilities:

  • Read the script thoroughly making note of any/all costuming specifications.

  • Design costumes that suggests character tendencies keeping in mind time period, age, gender, social status and style including accessories.  

  • Design costumes to include the established vision of the production

  • Research time period to ensure accurate and appropriate fashion of overall design. 

  • Attend and contribute to any and all production meetings. 

  • Collaborates with the director and production team in establishing costume design

  • Presents design concept to production team

  • Create costume plot

  • Attends rehearsals as available

  • Creates, buys, rents or borrows costumes and accessories and supervises their return.

  • Supplies rehearsal costumes

  • Arranges to repair and clean costumes during the run

  • Attends load- in, dress rehearsals, load out etc.

  • Works within a budget

Sound Designer

The sound designer reports to the director and to the production manager. The sound designer’s primary responsibility and function is to design and provide the sound effects and music to support the production as original compositions or from existing sources. The sound design should be textually based, collaborating with director’s vision and the designer’s expertise. 

Responsibilities:

  • Read the script thoroughly making note of any/all sound and music specifications.

  • Design sound utilizing pitch, volume, quality, direction and duration to support the onstage action.

  • Design sound to include the established vision of the production

  • Fulfill the duties of sound engineer to personal ability

  • Attend and contribute to any and all production meetings. 

  • Collaborates with the director and production team in establishing sound design

  • Presents design concept to production team

  • Create sound plot

  • Create cue sheet and system layout

  • Attends rehearsals as available

  • Coordinates rental and installation of sound equipment

  • Attends load- in, cue- to- cue, dress rehearsals, load out etc.

  • Attends load- in, dress rehearsals, load out etc.

  • Works within a budget

Skills:

  • Knowledgeable in all aspects of sound design including acoustics, create mood, tension, and location as well as a working knowledge of sound equipment
